You can always invite anyone in the United States as your co-founder. But this is not required to register a business. You can register an LLC or C Corporation as a solo entrepreneur.
There can be a lot of factors but in general you'll need to choose between being tax effective (LLC) or investor friendly (C Corporation). If you'll need funding in the near future, then a C Corporation is a good idea, otherwise register as an LLC for simpler structure and to minimize paperwork and taxes.
